I Wish I Was A Mermaid

So I am booking swimming lessons and I am freaking out.

I wasn’t nervous until I had actually spoke to someone and they asked “how comfortable are you in the water.” and I replied with “uuuuuh comfortable and water don’t come in the same sentence with me. I want to be a mermaid but my tail doesn’t like being in the water.”

In hindsight I realise I sound a little less than sane, but hey. He laughed and I continued with “What I mean is I hate being submerged in the water and get scared when people come near me in the water…so you know… I’ll be a great student.”

In all honesty he was very lovely about it and said “don’t worry we have had a lot worse than mermaid tails that don’t like being in water. We’ll be sure to get you swimming- when do you want to start?”

I. Am. Freaking. Out.

Have I actually just decided to go to someone who is trained in dealing with awkward freaking out adults who can’t swim? Blimey… I think I need my fever checked. What if he actually expects me to SWIM? I did NOT think this through at all.

Wish I could just jump in and be all like “THE OCEAN IS MY HOME…I’M FREEEE” But instead I go “I’m drowning in the puddle! Heeeeeelp!!”

Basically guys I need some moral support here. Am I the only one that wants something improving then freaks out when it comes to the point of change? Surely I’m not the only one…right? right?

Oh God… I need a cuppa.

Totally not alone, especially when it comes to water! I love the idea of being in water, but when it comes to actually physically being in it, I freak out. Which makes beach holidays a bit awkward when I refuse to paddle deeper than my knees for fear the current will knock my feet from under me and drag me to my watery grave. I think it all stems from nearly drowning in a wave pool when I was about twelve …

I’m probably not the best for helping with this fear, but I certainly understand it!

    • Well thank god! (Not that you’re scared like me, but thank god you get it and I’m not being completely crazy!) oh man! That must have been scary! I think I’m probably scared because when I was young some kids held my head under water and naturally that freaked me out! Maybe we should go on a paddling holiday? Where we just hold each other tight out of fear while splashing our feet gently in the sea?

It was pretty terrifying, but it makes an entertaining story! That sounds like a delightful holiday to be honest! Can we bring floatie rings and pool noodles out into the ocean and be the cool people? (I actually brought a pool noodle into the sea before and it was a great experience!)

      • You literally sound like the greatest person to go on a splashing holiday with. We can defiantly bring floaties!!! I’ll bring the duck rubber rings!

      • I think it can! It would make a day worth remembering! I’d be so happy! Aha! Just me and you sat slightly in the sea (you know where the ocean meets the sand) with rubber rings!

Drinking fizzy drinks from glass bottles through straws (because we’re going for a kind of retro look), while I desperately try not to sizzle and burn under the sun! It’s a beautiful, wonderful image!

We’d end up being those people whose picture was taken without us knowing, because we’re too busy having fun, and the picture would go viral because we’re so cool. We’d be people’s summer goals!

  2. So very very very proud of you ๐Ÿ˜€

I know it must be a big jump/dive to go from splashing to swimming but I’m sure you’ll soon pick it up with what sounds like a great teacher.

BTW this does mean when you come see me travelling I won’t hold back on watersport activities! But not pressure.. They all come with life jackets anyway :p

    • Thank You!
I am hoping that he’s magic and manages to help me not be so scared because I think that is probably the main problem.
Aha! Well actually the thing that kind of gave me the final push was the thought that I really wanted to do some water sports with you! So thanks for inadvertently pushing me! ๐Ÿ™‚
I am so excited to show you my swimming skills (I hope I actually get some!)
